APS Volcano Vista High School

One of the newest high schools in Albuquerque, Volcano Vista is designed based on a concept of Small Learning Communities (SLC) or career academies, a strategy that aims to improve student learning, in part, through facility design, by improving student-peer support, teacher contact and student socialization. The campus’s five academies are arranged in two-story wings accommodating two small learning communities. These wings are arranged along a spine, which negotiates the site slope over the length of the campus. The spine provides circulation to shared classrooms, offices, the commons area and food services, and the learning resource and performing arts centers.
