CNM: Learning Resource Center
Joseph M. Montoya Campus
The new learning resources center is located in the northeast quadrant of the CNM Joseph M. Montoya campus. It is a 10,000sf addition to Building “J”. The challenge was threefold:
- The first was to create a “state of the art” learning resource center. This is one of the most advanced Teleconferencing facilities in Albuquerque, serving a broad range of “distance learning” needs.
- The second challenge was to design an addition that would relate well to existing campus buildings. This was accomplished through the careful selection of brick and other exterior materials to insure the building would successfully blend into the campus palette.
- The third challenge was to move the Library entrance from the west end of Building “J” and establish a new main entrance to the north.
ENMU: Performing Arts Center
A true teaching facility in every way, this Performing Arts Center has a main stage purposely equipped with both motorized and manual rigging systems. The dramatic 420 seat multifunction theatre this stage serves also has traps, state-of-the-art sound, scene, and lighting systems and a large orchestra pit. Finishing out the facility are a 2,600 square foot “Black Box” experimental theatre, scene shop, costume shop, dressing and make-up areas, instructional/rehearsal classrooms, and offices for faculty and administration.
The bold exterior design of the Performing Arts Center reflects a Gothic Revival style reminiscent of historic campus buildings.
NMIMT: Workman Center
In September 1990, the Regents of New Mexico Tech (NMT) selected SMPC to begin work on a $4.5M upgrade to accommodate life safety and accessibility issues and to replace aging mechanical and electrical systems at Workman Center. During programming, it became clear that one unique group, the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Complex (EMTRC), needed a separate, secure space (40,000 gsf) away from the other departments. This resulted in a 2-phase project: a new EMRTC facility and the new Workman Center.
The new Workman Center was bid just as EMTRC was in completion. This building brought updated labs, classrooms, and auditorium space to the school. It also provided renovated space for the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and the Mineral Museum.
NMT: Library
Completed in September, 1991, this 53,000 sf facility is planned to handle anticipated growth of the campus into the 21st cenury. Because of the building’s prominent location at the main campus entrance, the design integrates a new building program with a prevailing Spanish Mission architecture style that exists on the NM Tech campus. A new clock tower also displays the Centennial Seal of the Insitute and acts as a landmark for visitors to this space age research center.
Flexibility was the key issue in the plan development. Data, voice and power distribution are accomplished via a flat cable under carpet system. The stack space and reference areas are laid out on a 5’0 x 5’0 planning module which is reflected in the ceilings. Nodes of specific functions and permanent building appurtenances flank the open center stack core. An intimate reading room on the upper level is the center for quiet study and contemplation.
NRAO
National Radio Astronomy Observatory Array Operations Center
This three-level 66,950 s.f. project houses flexible office design, lab, and central computer facility, which serves as the hub for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Very Long Base Operations (10 sites in Western Hemisphere). It is designed to synthesize, study, and make available to the astronomers of the world the data collected at the Very Large Array on the plains of St. Augustine as well as the Very Long Baseline Array.
