Placitas Library

The first 3,745 s.f. phase of the community library located in historic Placitas was inspired by the theme of sustainability in its broadest sense. Implementing the concept of sustainable community, the design recognizes the diversity and contributions of its patrons, friends, and volunteers. The library promotes a sense of community and acknowledges the need for accommodating flexibility. The building form honors the geography and history of its unique location by blending with the wide-open, rugged landscape. The building colors gives the library a subtle distinction. Sustainable building practices were incorporated in construction, and will continue in operation and maintenance of the building by the library staff.

The library houses 20,000 volumes and items in phase one in collection areas including children, general, reserve and young adult. A general, non-print area displays audio and video items; a computer area is provided for public access. The children’s area is adjacent to a multi-purpose room for children’s activities. A summer patio on the north and a winter courtyard on the south are linked by a portal providing more usable space for the library and areas to accommodate year-round events.

The first phase stands complete, but is designed to expand to 7,000 s.f. Sited to maximize views of the Sandia Mountains and western volcanoes, the building footprint is compact and efficient. Water efficiency is gained through low-flow plumbing fixtures, water faucet sensors and rain water catchment systems for future landscaping. Ample clerestory windows and skylights maximize natural daylight and reduce dependency on artificial lighting. The high performance glazing controls solar heat gain and glare, protecting library collections from harmful direct sunlight. Natural ventilation will flow from low north windows to high south windows on temperate days with no need for mechanical cooling.
